▪ For whom: Open is a competition category for anyone who is actively involved in creating online media content.
▪ Type of content acceptable for entry: We are searching for audiovisual experiences that can be shared through the Internet. The theme is open, but the work must not fit any other categories. Your entry work may be, for example, computer animation, an advertisement, a short film, a computer demo or real-time audiovisual work, a music video, a video which has been altered using digital effects, a graphic modelling, etc.
▪ Evaluation method and criteria: The jury will evaluate the works in accordance with the following criteria: innovation, quality of implementation, originality and aesthetic presentation.
▪ Timetable: Entries will be accepted until the final submission day on 2 August 2010. The date for the distribution of the prizes will be announced at a later time.
▪ Prizes: The total sum of the prizes in this category is 20,000 euro. Winner: 10,000 euro; second place: 6,000 euro; third place: 3,500 euro; additional Live2011.com community honourable mention: 500 euro.
▪ Format: The works must be submitted preferably in HD 1080, HD 720 or either square pixels- or anamorphic PAL -formats.
Depending on the situation, the work can also be delivered in custom resolution. For example, if the work is created by the means of pixel graphics, it is acceptable to submit the work in a considerably smaller resolution.
The work must be delivered as a digital file either through internet, or burned on a digital media (CD, DVD). In other words, for example, dvd-player encoded dvd-disk or a dv-tape are not acceptable delivery formats.
Acceptable file formats are avi, mov, wmv, mp4 or mpg. Any codec can be used, but the artist must be sure that at least the latest VLC-player can play the file without problems.
The work can also be submitted as a real-time software demo, either as an independent client or as a browser window embeddable application (java, actionscript).
The independent real-time applications will be converted to video formats, but the browser-embeddable applications will be published as they are in the Live 2011-site. Browser-embeddable applications must be functional at least on Firefox-, Safari-, Chrome-, IE7- and IE8-browsers and either on Java version 6 or Flash player 10. It is preferred that the size of the application adapts to the size of the browser window, but if the technical aspects or artistic expression of the work demands certain fixed resolution, must the maximum size be 800x600 pixels or less.
▪ All works must be brought out in 16:9 aspect ratio! Other aspect ratios such as 4:3, can be used within the 16:9 frame tough (letterbox).
PARTICIPATIVE MEDIA
20,000 euro, participatory, interactive media art, deadline 2 August 2010
▪ For whom: Participative Media is a competition category that is open to anyone who is actively involved in creating media art content. The main target group is media artists.
▪ Type of content acceptable for entry: Live2011.com Participative Media prizes will be awarded to works which enable the audience to actively take part in audiovisual works themselves through interactive means. The submitted works should make use of a variety of different interactive techniques, channels, equipment or media. Entry works might, for example, encourage users to experiment with creative content production and, through this participation, gain reinforced experiences. The work must also be accessible in some form through the Internet.
▪ Evaluation method and criteria: The jury will evaluate the works in accordance with the following criteria: participatory quality, interactive aspects, innovativeness, quality of implementation, originality and aesthetic presentation.
▪ Timetable: Entries will be accepted until the final submission day on 2 August 2010. The date for the distribution of the prizes will be announced at a later time.
▪ Prizes: The total sum of the prizes in this category is 20,000 euro. Winner: 10,000 euro; second place: 6,000 euro; third place: 3,500€ euro; additional Live2011.com community honourable mention: 500 euro.
▪ Format: The physical, electrical and digital format of the work is free. Along submission, the artist must provide a comprehendible video- and other documentation of a functioning work, which reveals all the essential information for the evaluation of the work. The format of the video must follow the same guidelines as all the other video submissions to the Live 2011 Grand Prix.
The artist has to provide all the necessary equipment and materials needed to a functioning work. It is possible to negotiate with the Turku 2011 Foundation, about the use of the equipment owned or governed by the Turku 2011 Foundation.
A prize-winning artist must be ready to deliver the work as a whole to be experienced in the city of Turku, and committed to help to make the work functional if needed.
DIGITAL TURKU 2011

▪ For whom: Digital Turku 2011 is a competition category open to anyone who is actively involved in creating media content.
▪ Type of content acceptable for entry: Prizes will be awarded to experimental, alternative, creative and non-stereotypical audiovisual interpretations of cityspace, like Turku. The work must also be accessible in some form through the Internet.
▪ Evaluation method and criteria: The evaluation of the works will place emphasis on their innovation, quality of implementation, originality and aesthetic presentation. The evaluation of the works will be carried out in accordance with the evaluation criteria by the Live2011.com Grand Prix jury.
▪ Timetable: Entries will be accepted until the final submission day on 2 August 2010. The date for the distribution of the prizes will be announced at a later time.

CULTURE 2.0
40,000 euro, entertaining, viral, innovative application website or web service, deadline 2 August 2010
▪ For whom: Culture 2.0 is a competition category directed for everyone who is actively creating media content for web. The main target group for this category are new media businesses.
▪ Type of content acceptable for entry: The work must be a social media application, which makes use of web 2.0 elements in order to create new kind of artistic and cultural experience, also web sites and web services will be accepted. We grant awards for content applications developed for web societies, which are high-quality in content, entertaining, easily spreading, addictive and renew social media. The application, web site or web service is desired to create interaction between users and strengthen the sense of community through artistic or creative means.
▪ Evaluation method and criteria: The Turku 2011 Foundation will select the winners of this category based on the evaluation of the jury. The evaluation criteria include the quality of the implementation, entertainment value, usability, ease of distribution and/or connection to other social networks and innovativeness.
▪ Timetable: Entries will be accepted until the final submission day on 2 August 2010. The date for the distribution of the prizes will be announced at a later time.
▪ Prizes: The total sum of the prizes in this category is 40,000 euro. Winner: 20,000 euro; second place: 12,000 euro; third place: 8,000 euro.
▪ Format: The application must be developed on an existing, widely used social media platform, such as Facebook, Joomla Social or Elgg. The work can also be an independent website or service that reinvents social media. The participant works must be complete and fully fuctional. The participant must deliver a functioning copy of the application along all the files needed to the Turku 2011 Foundation. Turku 2011 Foundation must be able to test the application on the artist’s own server after the submission of the work, in order to evaluate the content and functionality of the application.
ARTISTIC GAME
8,000 euro, innovative, experimental online game, deadline 2 August 2010
▪ For whom: Live2011.com Artistic Game is a competition category for anyone who is actively involved in creating online media content. The main target group includes private game designers / groups, and small and medium-sized game companies. The Live2011.com Artistic Game prize is intended to support creative game designing and showcase the talents of innovative game designers.
▪ Type of content acceptable for entry: The entries must be browser-based games. We will award prizes to new and experimental games in terms of their user interface, gameplay, appearance or content.
▪ Evaluation method and criteria: The evaluation of the works will focus on the innovative quality of the content, appearance or game interface, the gameplay, and the experimental nature, originality and quality of the implementation.
▪ Timetable: The entry period will end on 2 August 2010.The date for the distribution of the prizes will be announced at a later time.
▪ Prizes: The total sum of the prizes in this category is 8,000 euro. Winner: 5,000 euro; second place: 1,500 euro; third place: 1,000 euro; additional Live2011.com community honourable mention: 500 euro
▪ Format: The work must be functional online, in a web browser. The game must work online independently, without a downloadable client. The game must be functional at least on Mozilla Firefox and preferably also on Safari-, Chrome-, IE7- and IE8-browsers.
The artist must supply Turku 2011 foundation all digital material needed to make the game functional on the Live 2011-site.
If the game uses a database, Turku 2011 Foundation must be able to test the game on the artist’s own server after the submission of the work, in order to evaluate the content and functionality of the game.
It is preferred that the size of the application adapts to the size of the browser window. If the technical aspects or artistic expression of the work demands certain fixed resolution, must the maximum size be 800x600 pixels or less.
The form of an html-based user interface is free within the browser window.
EVENT AWARDS
20,000 euro, event-specific
▪ For whom: Event Awards will be awarded during the media art events such as Assembly Summer and Alternative Party to be held during 2009–2011. The competition category is meant for those individuals and groups participating in these specific events and competitions.
▪ Type of content acceptable for entry: The event-specific award categories will be announced in connection with the advance information for each co-operative event. The winner of each Event Awards prize category will participate in the final for one other competition category (Open, Participative Media, Digital Turku 2011, Culture 2.0 or Artistic Game) as selected by the Turku 2011 Foundation, if the work is submitted prior to the deadline for the specific category in question.
▪ Evaluation method and criteria: Instructions available from the website for each specific event.
▪ Timetable: The timetable for the submission of the competition entries, the evaluation and the awards will follow the timetable set for each co-operation event. See individual instructions for each specific event.
▪ Prizes: The total sum of the prizes is more than 20,000 euro. The prize sums for each event will be announced in connection with any information about the event itself.

NATIONAL STUDENT AWARD

CREATIVE IDEA FOR MOBILE CITY GUIDE

▪ Type of content acceptable for entry: In the Creative Idea for Mobile City Guide category, we will award ideas that are creative, entertaining in terms of their content, can be localised and are economically interesting. All entries must be applicable to a Mobile City Guide system.
▪ Special category rules: The Turku 2011 Foundation reserves the right to commercially use and further develop any submitted idea. The Turku 2011 Foundation will not publish or release any ideas submitted to this prize category. An idea may refer to content, format or service.
▪ Evaluation method and criteria: The jury and Turku 2011 Foundation will evaluate the idea in accordance with the following criteria: creativity, export potential, feasibility of the idea, and the potential and ease of localisation of the earnings model within different environments.
▪ Timetable: The competition entries must be submitted by 15 November 2009. The Turku 2011 Foundation will not publish or release any ideas submitted to this prize category.
▪ Prizes: The total sum of the prizes in this category is 1,000 euro. There will only be one winner, who will be awarded the entire prize sum.
